Happy New Year! I’m resuming daily centuries into 2024, now as part of a larger group undertaking a 2024 Writing Challenge (title vague purposefully). I’ll have an index of those participating soon! The rules I’m setting for myself are:

  • write and post at least 6 days a week (ideally 7)
  • keep each standard post to 98-102 words
  • at least once a week, write something inspired by another writer's post
  • on sunday, to end the week, one post of unrestricted length which I’ll write over the course of the week
  • follow the week’s theme when possible! (themes decided... somehow? once weekly)
  • ~~~~~~

It’s fun opening these with a self-descriptive century but this deserves more context than I can give in 100 words!

Last November I started doing a Century a Day challenge with my friend alice, which turned out to be much more fun and motivating than I could have ever expected. I managed to reach a daily posting streak of 49 days before slowing for winter break. The best part of the CaD challenge was doing it in parallel with others, keeping me honest and inspired by the writings of my friends. So, we’re bringing it back for 2024, this time with a bigger group and looser guidelines. Check out her summary of the challenge, and directory of co-conspirators, here!

But hey, do you want to get better at writing? The best way to do that is to write regularly! This challenge is hoping to make that easier by gathering a like-minded group, where everyone sets their own rules for themselves tailored to what you want to do and can manage (mine are above!). We’re all going to learn as we go, and drag each other forwards until this becomes a habit. If you’re reading this and are interested, send me a message at, uh, oh sorry give me a second.

Ok there we got an about me page up. Come say hi!

We’re going to have weekly themes, too. I haven’t decided how much I’m going to prioritize them, but the hope is that they’ll act as a seed for creativity to grow from. I’m also going to take direct inspiration from one of our co-conspirators once a week, and link their writing under the post.

I’m going to continue the day counter that I started with Century a Day, even though we’re following a different ruleset, so Jan 1st 2024 will start at day 53. For my rules i'm gonna give myself some wiggle room around 100 words exactly to cut down on the time I spend fiddling individual words around trying to make the exact number, which was my least favourite part of the Century a Day format. In general, canonziing old memories, exploring ideas, and taking joy in art through daily writing has been wonderful. I hope you enjoy the journey too!

Happy writing and a happy New Year! ヾ(^▽^)シφ__
